A new study shows which antivirus programs can be downloaded for free from the Microsoft website.
The results show the most popular antivirus package for Windows 10, for example, has a download rate of nearly 70 percent, compared to the 5.4 percent of the free version.
The free version has an even higher download rate, with more than 60 percent.
The researchers found that while the free software may not offer the best protection for people who have a high risk of infection, it is still a good option.
“The results of our study demonstrate that Windows 10 provides the most effective protection for users who have high risk for infection,” Dr. Mark Pascual, an assistant professor of biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and lead author of the study, told ABC News.
“However, it does not provide the best results when compared to other antivirus packages.”
While the antivirus market is highly saturated, a recent report found that nearly two-thirds of users do not have a Microsoft account.
Microsoft has also added an “Avast Free” option to its Windows 10 Home, which gives users free antivirus and firewall software.
While the free Microsoft Windows 10 edition is currently available for download, the study showed that the software is still available for purchase from the company’s website.
Dr. Pascua says he was surprised to see that Windows 7 and Windows 8 users had a higher download average.
“These people are not necessarily the most computer savvy, but they have been able to download the most advanced software on the market and they’re paying for it,” Dr Pascuan said.
Microsoft did not respond to ABC News’ request for comment.
